STATE & POWER
Understanding power. Explaining a changing world.
Editorial architecture

How we label our work

Labels tell readers what kind of claim a page is making. They are editorial promises, not decorative categories.

01News

What happened?

A factual account centred on a new development. News pieces prioritise verified events, documents, statements and data. Context can be included, but interpretation should not become the principal product.

Use when the principal value is verified new information.
02Analysis

What does it change?

Evidence-led interpretation that explains mechanisms, consequences, constraints and competing explanations. Analytical conclusions are identified as analysis rather than presented as uncontested fact.

Use when interpretation and causal or institutional explanation are the principal value.
03Briefing

What should a reader understand together?

A structured synthesis of multiple developments, decisions or indicators. Recurring products such as The Week in Power and The Veto Point are briefings, with their selection logic and methodology made visible.

Use for structured recurring products and multi-development synthesis.
04Research

What new evidence can we contribute?

Work built around an original dataset, systematic document review, tracker, methodology or other research contribution. Research must explain its evidence base, method, limitations and update history.

Reserve for work with an original research contribution.
05Opinion

What is the author's argument?

Clearly labelled argument or commentary. Opinion can use evidence, but its purpose is to advance an attributed viewpoint rather than represent State & Power's reporting or institutional analysis.

Keep visibly separate from News, Analysis, Briefing and Research.
A stricter rule for Research

Research must add something to the evidence base.

We do not label an article Research merely because it cites research. The label is reserved for work with an original dataset, tracker, systematic document analysis, reproducible method or comparable contribution.
